Boat Launch Operations and Management Plan

Okanagan Lake was noted as an important community asset throughout the Imagine Kelowna process and residents shared the importance of balancing recreational quality of life opportunities with environmental protection, water quality, and public ownership of the waterfront.

The City’s boat launches require significant annual maintenance to ensure they remain functional, and their management and operations represents a tangible and practical opportunity to ensure fair and equitable lake access for residents, visitors, and businesses alike.

We are creating a 15-year plan to navigate the future of our City’s boating facilities, to ensure our public amenities are accessible for all and preserved for years to come.

Project Area

The plan will focus on the Cook Road, Water Street, and Sutherland Bay boat launches. These three main boat launches are at or near their end of life and require assessment, attention, and action to continue safely operating.

Project Timeline

Assessment of the existing and future conditions of the City’s boat launches was completed by the project team in Fall 2021. Findings from this assessment, as well as the feedback collected from community engagement in March 2022, will help to identify options and develop recommendations for the final plan in Fall 2022.

We are trying to do survey and it will not accept our postal code. Very frustrating. Please add V1W5B1 to your list or tell us how to proceed as we can’t get past that point. Our address is 824 Kuipers Cres. V1W5B1.

    Good morning,

Thank you for letting us know! Unfortunately, sometimes the website has issues recognizing newer or more remote areas. We suggest as a workaround users enter the postal code of a business near them, school, or their place of work. Please let us know if the issue still arises and we will bring this up with our partners at Bang the Table who develop the site. Thank you for your interest in registering and participating in this important initiative!

    Sincerely,

    Leanne

Is the cost of maintaining boat launch sites carried by boat owners? Is general tax revenue directed to that project?

Thomas Davey asked 4 months ago

    Hello Thomas,

    Thank you for your question.

Currently, taxation funds the annual maintenance costs of Kelowna’s municipal boat launches; however, as per a recently approved report to council, businesses who use the boat launches for profit, will now pay a fee for the 2022 boat season. The survey seeks to understand what level of service residents expect from public boat launch amenities, thoughts on funding sources, and help inform future investments.

If you haven’t already filled it out, we welcome your response. If you know other people who may also want to share their insights, please pass on the link!

    Thank you,

     Leanne

    Hi!
    Try this:

This ensures the feedback our residents offer is from a valid, genuine source. You should receive a confirmation email in your inbox (*check your Spam/Junk folder too). Once you've confirmed your account, you'll be all set!

Thank you for registering and we can't wait to hear from you,
    Leanne
