Consultation has concluded
The new Okanagan Mission Junior Middle school, 1211 Frost Road, will feature a Neighbourhood Learning Centre (NLC). A NLC helps to support a vibrant community by offering space for community services, recreation and culture. These centres use space that may be otherwise empty during evenings or weekends.
Feedback on facility use and program ideas was collected until end of day Sunday, July 22. Individuals who were selected for the prize draw were emailed directly.
The school's anticipated opening date is fall 2019.
Survey results
134 surveys were received; majority were from V1W (South Kelowna), with several V1Y (Central Kelowna)
58% of respondents currently participate in City programs and activities
78% of respondents would consider registering their family for programs or activities whereas 71% would register themselves.
45% of respondents would drive 10 to 15 minutes to access the Centre
Top programs categories that residents would be interested in are:
Fitness programs (74%)
Summer camps (70%)
Adult and youth programs (general interest) (64%)
Spring break camps (56%)
Children 6 and up programs (52%)
Adult sports and leagues (51%)
69% of respondents would use the facility one to two times per week
Vast majority of participants would use the facility from late afternoon (70%) to evening (67%) and/or on weekends (63%)
Next steps
Staff will create a 2019 operating budget for the centre. Following budget approval programs and activities will be scheduled and launched in approximately fall of 2019 to coincide with the new school opening date.
